1 Corinthians 2
Journey Through The Bible
Old Testament Reading: Ezekiel 20-24
New Testament Reading: 1 Corinthians 2
Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, since the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except his spirit within him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God (1 Corinthians 2: 10-12)
God has chosen those who trust in Him to be the recipients of the depth of His wisdom. God reveals His wisdom to believers, not to the unbelieving world. Unsaved people walk by sight and cannot understand the truths of God. The person without the Spirit does not receive what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it (v14).
Paul explains that there are feelings that are so personal, things that are so private, experiences that are so intimate that no one knows them except the person’s own spirit. Paul further explains that the same is true of God. There are deep and intimate things in Him that only His Spirit knows. The Holy Spirit is the only person who knows the deep things of God and He reveals them to us.
The moment we place our faith in the Lord, the Holy Spirit indwells us and begins transforming us into Christ’s image. The Holy Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. v10b and communicates His thoughts to us so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God (v12b). (See also John 16:13-15, & Eph. 3:14-19)
Paul states the Spirit communicates the divine wisdom of God because man could otherwise never understand it. But if only God would speak and open his lips against you! He would show you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides (Job 6:5-6).
In writing to the Ephesians, Paul spoke of the two sides of wisdom. He prayed that we would be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love (Eph 3:18). Paul called the one side of wisdom the length and width, and the other side the height and depth. We might call them the horizontal wisdom and the vertical wisdom.
The horizontal side of wisdom would be the ministry of God’s Word. We often understand the Word of God when it is preached because it is explained in a way that ministers to our minds. But God wants more for His children. He wants Believers to also experience the other side of wisdom, the deep side, the vertical wisdom. This is the ministry of God’s Spirit. The Holy Spirit takes the ministry of the Word and reveals to our hearts and souls the riches of His glory. So that we can know Christ’s love that surpasses knowledge and be filled with all the fullness of God (Eph 3:19).
