Luke 1: 39-80

Journey Through The Bible
     Old Testament Reading:
Psalms 7-12
New Testament Reading: Luke 1: 39-80

And Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, because he has looked with favor on the humble condition of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed, because the Mighty One has done great things for me, and his name is holy (Luke 1: 46-49).

This section of scripture contains one of the most worshipful portions of the Bible. Here, a young girl maybe 13 or 14 years old, gives praise to God in the most sincere, authentic, and genuine manner. Her worship comes from deep within her heart, unlike so much of our Sunday morning worship that is often just a routine of going through the motions.

What a humble woman of faith Mary was. When the angel Gabriel told her what was to happen, she replied I am the Lord’s servant, may it happen to me as you have said (v38). She followed the Lord’s leading to leave her home and travel to her relative Elizabeth for conformation, counsel, and encouragement. She realized the great honor that was given her, but gave God the glory, knowing it was the greatness of the Lord and not her own doing. Even at her young age, she knew and memorized the scriptures, for she quoted in her song of praise many passages from the Psalms, Hanna’s prayer in Samuel, and other prophecies.

Mary believed God, studied the scriptures, and surrendered to His will. As a result, God performed a miracle in her life and used her to bring the Savior into the world. What an example this godly woman is for us today. Not someone to worship or pray to, but to emulate her life. May we develop such a servant’s heart to serve God wherever He leads us. And to be so deeply in love with God that we will study and learn His Holy Scriptures so that it flows from deep within our hearts in praise to Him.
