1 Thessalonians 2

Journey Through The Bible
   Old Testament Reading:
Hosea 9-11
New Testament Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2

As you know, like a father with his own children, we encouraged, comforted, and implored each one of you to walk worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12).

When they were with the Thessalonians, Paul and his helpers were gentle, not authoritarian. They demonstrated an utmost tenderness, comparable to that of a mother nursing her own children (v7). Paul gently and tenderly cradled these infant Believers, nourishing them with his own life and the pure milk of the Word of God. Selflessly, he committed himself to understand their hopes and fears so he could meet their deepest needs.

For a further comparison of Paul’s expression of concern, he changes his metaphor from a mother’s tender care to that of a devoted father. If the former suggests tenderness and affection, the latter suggests wisdom and counsel. Christians need fatherly teaching and advice as well as motherly care.

As a father, he encouraged, comforted, and implored them to live a holy life. He encouraged them to persevere for the Lord despite persecutions, and he testified concerning the blessedness of obedience to the will and word of God.

The goal of Paul’s ministry was that the saints would walk worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory (v12). Every child must learn how to walk and must have exemplary models to follow. Paul worked hard to live out the principles he was trying to preach. He was pleased to share with the Thessalonians not only the gospel of God but also our own lives (v8). Paul’s ministry focused on the benefits of those he served so that they might follow the Lord and enjoy His presence forever.

Paul provides for us a beautiful example of faithful stewards, loving mothers, and concerned fathers. No wonder the church at Thessalonica prospered despite persecution and shared the gospel with others for miles around.
