Yet I am writing you a new command, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother or sister is in the darkness until now. The one who loves his brother or sister remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him (1 John 2:8-10).

Light and Dark, the classic contrast of good and evil. The good guy always wears the white hat, the bad guy wears the black hat. Light represents love, while darkness and hatred are synonymous.

The Apostle John states God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in him (1 John 1:5b). God is Light; Sin is Darkness. God’s light represents His truth and purity. Sin’s darkness represents the world. For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions – is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever (John 2:16-17).

The Apostle John makes another comparison, the difference between saying and doing. Four times John writes “If we say”. It is clear that if our Christian life is to amount to more than just talk; we must also walk or live what we believe. If we are in fellowship with God, if we are truly walking in the light, our lives will back up what our mouths are saying. But if we are walking in darkness, living in sin, then our lives will contradict our beliefs.

We walk in the light when we are obeying God’s Word. In order to obey it, we must first know it by spending time prayerfully reading and studying Scripture. Then, as we meditate on His Words and yield to the conviction of the Spirit, God’s light will penetrate our hearts and reveal whether truth and purity characterize our lives.

John says that a Christian who is walking in the light obeying God and His Word, is going to love his brothers and sisters in Christ. If a Christian walks in the light and is in fellowship with God, he will also be in fellowship with others in God’s family. Love and light go together as much as darkness and hatred goes together. It is impossible to be in fellowship with the Father and out of fellowship with another Christian at the same time.

As believers, let us begin each day determined to walk in the Light, armed with Scripture to keep us on track.
